After a couple of recent bouts with blisters in various places on my feet, I decided it was time to stop running in my typical cotton-based socks that I've had for the past 2+ years and step up to a pair of socks designed for running. I don't think old/bad socks are the only problem, but I figured it couldn't hurt to run in socks that are designed for running.
I bought my last pair of running shoes from an online retailer called Road Runner Sports. I remember looking around their website and all of the favorable reviews for their brand of running socks. So, I decided to give them a try… There are several styles of running socks, I opted to try their RRS Dryroad Elite Socks.
Two things about these socks caught my attention:
1. The socks were cut for the right and left foot. I've never heard of such a thing, but it makes sense. If my shoes are shaped for my feet, why not my socks?
2. The Price… $25 seemed like a lot to pay for 3 pair of socks, but then I thought, if these socks help me run more comfortably, that's a pretty small price to pay
The socks arrived… The fact that I was really looking forward to running in new socks has to be a sign that I'm probably a little too addicted to Triathlon training, but that's a different topic.
My first impression was that they felt softer than I thought they would and also seemed a bit small. I ordered the Men's XL (sizes 11 – 13) I wear a size 13 and wondered if they would be a bit tight. I tried them on… They felt snug, but in a good way. It was clear immediately that they are cut differently for each foot. They sort of hug arch of my foot much more than a normal sock. Also, each sock is labeled with a R and L for the appropriate foot.
My first run was a 5 mile run on the treadmill. While this sort of run isn't long enough or intense enough to cause blisters, I found the socks very comfortable and the form-fitting nature of the sock really makes a difference in how they feel.
Because of other injuries I haven't done any long outdoor runs other than a 40 minute BRICK run and my impression was still the same. The have the right amount of cushioning for me. I'm not a fan of really thin or really thick socks… these are a good compromise. I think the form fitting nature of the sock will help in the area I usually get blisters which is on the front part of my arch.
Overall, I'm sold on these socks.
Pros:
Cut for each foot
Not too thick or too thin
Fits very snug to foot, helps prevent sliding
Cons:
Price – but the price isn't over the top
